Sail Through History
The Fairmont Algonquin is offering guests the chance to travel back in time, exactly 400 years, to the birthplace of permanent French settlement in North America. This once in a lifetime journey will rely on wind and the world's highest tides just as it did 400 year ago.
Before the settlement of New York City (1661) or Boston (1629) or even Plymouth Rock (1620) there was Ste Croix Island in 1604. The Sail Ste. Croix package is one of the ways that The Fairmont Algonquin is celebrating this summer's historic event. "This is a unique way to experience Ste. Croix 2004, by taking Champlain's journey up the river and seeing the island as he would have done" says Mark Paul, Director of Sales for The Fairmont Algonquin.
When guests leave the St. Andrews pier for a four-hour sail around Ste. Croix Island, they will be transported in time and place as they learn the amazing stories of Samuel de Champlain and these earliest French settlers. The crew of the Schooner Molly Kool are well versed in the lore of the region, and include proficient storytellers and naturalists. Captain and crew are fully bilingual. Refreshments and song accompany the journey.
The Sail Ste. Croix Package includes:
- Two Nights Accommodation at The Fairmont Algonquin (Fairmont room)
- A Schooner adventure on the Molly Kool (departure time determined by tide schedules)
- Breakfast each morning
- One dinner in the Passamaquoddy Dining Room
- Price Per Person: $ 429 (before tax based on double occupancy)
- Available May 15 to Sept 30th
Ste. Croix 2004 is a commemorative celebration of the first French settlement in North America. In 1604, Pierre du Gua and Samuel de Champlain led an expedition to the New World, and they formed a permanent settlement on Ste. Croix Island.
