Souls In Rhythm (SiR) may very well be the most undiscovered critically acclaimed band in Canada.
An anomaly on the prairies, SiR is a four piece funk/soul squad from Calgary, Alberta. Even before the release of their debut album, they have already amassed a heap of accolades. In their relatively unknown existence they are: finalists of the National Songwriting Competition, winners of the CBC Showcase Competition, finalists of the Alberta-wide 'Big Break' Songwriting Competition, finalists of the Calgary Urban Talent Search, finalists of the Unsigned Vibe Urban Music Competition and winners of Calgary's Last Band Standing Performance Competition.
Formed by vocalist/keyboardist Scott Henderson, whose last project was the R&B vocal group The EarthTONES (5 top-20 hits, 2 Juno nominations, toured the world etc.), SiR seems destined to climb as equally lofty heights.
SiR will soon release their lead single to radio but have already developed a healthy presence performing. Scott attributes this to their extreme passion for crafting songs; "We realize that songs are our vehicle. And the only way to make this all take off is to write songs that connect with people. And the only way to write songs that connect, is to serve the song."
In deed their songs have universal appeal. Aside from possessing an ultra funky and soulful sound, running through SiR's repertoire are inspirational and positive lyrics, despite a range of topics. Scott explains the effect this has on their audience; "At shows, people are often surprised when we tell them that we wrote the songs. We're proud that people can see us for the first time and feel like they just saw a band they know." Souls In Rhythm do the odd cover tune in their repertoire (the boys do a thrilling version of Stevie Wonder's 1970s classic I Wish), but a SiR show is their own brand of straight up high-energy, fun and infectious funk and soul.
Scott hopes their impending release will break the band to widespread acceptance, but until then, SiR is building a strong base of fans of all ages. Their music may seem to appeal to fans of Justin Timberlake, Prince or Jamiroquai but they've been performing for about as wide a demographic as possible. Scott reveals; "Before The EarthTONES broke to the mainstream, we pretty much just did corporate gigs. That's how I paid my way through university! I hope that we can guide Souls In Rhythm to always be able to perform for people of all ages, and backgrounds".
And already without widespread exposure, they're now booked to perform at high-profile public events strictly on their musicality. Live show highlights for SiR have included opening for hip-hop heroes Swollen Members and Maestro, performing at the Western Canadian Music Awards (courtesy of Standard Radio's Vibe 98.5 FM), co-headlining Canada Day in their home city, and playing at the Calgary Corporate Challenge Final Bash. They've also accepted invites to play at Toronto's NXNE and Vancouver's NewMusicWest music festivals. CBC Radio 1 has broadcast an entire SiR show and they've been interviewed and shown in performance on MuchMusic.
